Kathryn Plummer Boden is 6-foot-6. She will tell you that is the least interesting thing about her game.
An Olympic silver medalist with Team USA at the Paris 2024 Games and a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team since 2019, Kathryn arrived there by way of one of the most decorated collegiate careers in the sport. At Stanford she was a 3x NCAA champion, a two-time AVCA National Player of the Year, and a recipient of the James E. Sullivan Award, graduating with a degree in human biology.
She then spent seven seasons as a professional in Italy, Japan, and Turkey, collecting three Italian Serie A1 titles, a CEV Champions League title, and a Club World Championship. Each move meant landing somewhere she did not speak the language, learning a new system, and earning a place on a roster that had never seen her play. She did that three times.
Kathryn now plays outside hitter for LOVB Los Angeles, back in the Southern California area she grew up in and playing professionally in her own country for the first time in her career. She speaks candidly about strength as function rather than appearance, about the distance between what people assume a 6-foot-6 athlete was handed and what a long career actually costs, and about what she would say to any young athlete who has been told to take up less room.
