Founded in 2014 by the husband-and-wife duo Michael Trotter Jr. and Tanya Trotter, The War And Treaty has emerged as one of the most electrifying new acts in American music. Blending the soul of gospel, the grit of blues, the fire of rock ‘n’ roll and the heart of country, their sound is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
The pair were nominated for Best New Artist and Best American Roots Song at the 2024 GRAMMY Awards, and have also received nominations for Duo of the Year at the CMA Awards for two consecutive years and Vocal Duo of the Year at the ACM Awards. They are two-time Americana Music Award winners (Duo/Group of the Year) and have earned additional recognition from the CMT Music Awards, Folk Alliance International, People’s Choice Country Awards, as well as from the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry.
Before forming The War And Treaty, Michael Trotter Jr. served in the U.S. Army, where he discovered his voice and calling as a songwriter and musician. While stationed in Iraq, he was tasked with writing songs to honor fallen soldiers — a profound experience that shaped his songwriting and his understanding of music’s power to heal. Upon returning home, Michael turned that pain and purpose into the foundation of his art, bringing a message of resilience and hope to the stage.
Tanya Trotter (née Blount) began her artistic journey in the world of film, television and music, gaining national attention for her role as a featured singer in the beloved movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit alongside Lauryn Hill and Whoopi Goldberg. Her breathtaking performance of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” became a defining moment that introduced her extraordinary voice to the world.
Together, Michael and Tanya channel their life stories — from the battlefields to the big screen, from heartbreak to healing — into performances that are as moving as they are uplifting. Their partnership, both musical and personal, stands as a testament to the transformative power of love, faith, and song.
