Tommy Lloyd has quickly established himself as one of the most successful head coaches in college basketball history, leading the University of Arizona to sustained national prominence since taking over the program in 2021. In his first five seasons, he has compiled a 148–36 record—the most wins ever by a head coach in their first five years—and set an additional NCAA record with 61 wins in his first two seasons.
Lloyd’s tenure at Arizona has been defined by winning at the highest level. He has led the Wildcats to four Sweet 16 appearances in five years and a return to the Final Four in 2026, highlighted by a program-record 36-win season. Under his leadership, Arizona has captured three conference regular season championships (2022, 2024, 2026) and three conference tournament titles (2022, 2023, 2026), while consistently ranking among the nation’s elite programs.
His success has earned widespread recognition, including 2026 Naismith National Coach of the Year, Sporting News National Coach of the Year, and Big 12 Coach of the Year honors. In his debut season, Lloyd made history by sweeping National Coach of the Year awards from the AP, NABC, and USBWA, in addition to being named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. He was also named 2025 USA Basketball Junior Coach of the Year after leading U.S. teams to gold medals at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup and FIBA U19 World Cup.
Known for his fast-paced, unselfish style of play and emphasis on player development, Lloyd has coached multiple conference Players of the Year and developed numerous NBA Draft picks, including first-round selections. His teams are consistently among the most efficient in the country on both ends of the floor.
Prior to Arizona, Lloyd spent 20 years at Gonzaga as an assistant coach, where he helped build one of the most successful programs in college basketball, contributing to a 578–109 record, multiple deep NCAA Tournament runs, and the development of numerous NBA players.
