Developing the growth of outlaw triathlons

The Outlaw Triathlon series has established itself as one of the most respected collections of endurance events in British Triathlon – a season-long journey that takes athletes from the Norfolk coastline to the waterways of Nottingham, offering race experiences that balance competitive challenge with a community spirit that is genuinely its own.

Founded in 2010, the series has grown from a single event into a multi-weekend calendar that attracts competitors of every ability, from first-timers taking on their debut long-distance challenge to seasoned athletes hunting course records. Since that first race, more than 36,000 athletes have crossed an Outlaw finishing line, a figure that speaks to what the series has built over fifteen years.

The season opens at the Outlaw Nottingham Weekend, the series’ fast, flat half-distance race at the National Water Sports Centre. The most in-demand weekend of the year, it draws 3,000 athletes and caters for all abilities — from sprint distance to the half, with relay options and Future Outlaw junior races making it a genuine festival of multisport.

The series then moves to North Norfolk for the Outlaw Holkham Weekend, set within the historic grounds of Holkham Estate. Athletes swim in the private lake in front of Holkham Hall, cycle a rolling route through the Norfolk countryside past Sandringham Estate, and run through the estate’s parkland to a finish that produces one of the best atmospheres on the UK triathlon circuit. A gravel sprint, 10K, Aquabike and kids’ races sit alongside the flagship half, making Holkham as much a family weekend as a race day.

The season concludes with the Outlaw Original Weekend, the race that started it all. The full distance course is one of the most demanding tests in endurance sport, with a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and a 26.2 mile run to finish off. Those who finish don’t simply complete a race; they earn the right to call themselves an Outlaw.

Across the full season, the series has been voted Event of the Year multiple times by 220 Triathlon magazine, and over 95% of competitors say they would return to an Outlaw event, a consistent reflection of events built from the athlete’s point of view, in locations that inspire, and delivered with a standard of organisation that keeps people coming back year after year.
